Our Community Cares (OCC) began in 1992, when two single mothers living in a subsidized housing complex in Burlington decided they wanted to create a healthier neighbourhood for their families and a better life for their children. In addition to issues related to single parenting, many families face challanges such as: insufficient finances to meet basic family needs such as food and clothing, language barriers, multicultural challenges, mental health issues, social isolation, insufficient support system and inadequate access to recreational activities.
In 1995, Halton Community Housing Corporation agreed to turn one of their 54 townhouse units on Burloak Drive into a community centre and the first OCC Community Centre was born.
Each community is different and because of this, each OCC is different too. At the OCC Community Centre, children ages 0-17 and their families living in Halton, can meet with other community members, participate in programs and take advantage of a wide variety of services right in their own neighbourhood.
